Birds

The trouble with feathers!

Illustrating birds comes with its own particular series of challenges for the artist...

Feathers have their own complicated structure and come in a wide variety of forms from large robust tail feathers to small almost fur-like down feathers with one type of feather often overlaying another.

You don't need to be an Ornithologist to recognise that birds come in an almost limitless array of often bright and even irridescent colours which can be a technical minefield for the artist.

Birds are not created from feathers alone, the beak, legs and claws each have their own colour and texture.

This illustration of a Macaw was created using pastel pencils.
